Viridor’s Hi-Vis approach seals MediaCity UK contract success
MEDIACITYUK, the Salford home of broadcasters BBC and ITV and the heart of northern British media, has renewed a partnership with waste management company Viridor.
The seven-days-a-week, three-year contract sees Viridor collect an annual average of 210 tonnes of cardboard and paper, 170 tonnes comingled mixed recycling, and 800 tonnes of general waste.
Viridor’s split-body vehicles enable the fi rm to signifi cantly reduce carbon emissions, maximise recycling potential, and maintain a landfi ll diversion solution.
The safe and sustainable ‘trio-bin’ recycle and waste collection service is achieved by separating waste into cardboard and paper, comingled (glass, plastic and cans) and general waste (mixed residual/organic waste). These are emptied into split-body trade vehicles that feature three pods (one for each waste stream), which means that all the waste can be collected during one site visit.
To cement the new contract, Viridor and MediaCityUK, which fi rst began working together in 2013, intend to incorporate a new ‘in partnership’ message on the collection vehicles, driver T-shirts and new bins.
Viridor will collect most of all waste and recycling during late hours, to increase productivity for the bustling MediaCityUK area. The remainder – closest to residential areas where noise reduction is essential – will form part of a later visit.
The cardboard recovered as part of the contract will be recycled through the Traff ord Park facility, with the comingled material destined for the Warth Road Materials Recycling Facility in Bury.
Non-recyclable general waste will be diverted from landfi ll and directed to Viridor’s energy recovery facility in Runcorn, to be used to create renewable energy.
