FIRE SUPPRESSION
FEATURE
Number one in dealing with fi re: Helios Systems Limited
EVERY week there is a news story about a recycling company going up in smoke because they had an insuffi cient fi re suppression system in place. But have no fear, Helios Systems Limited are here to extinguish any alarming worries.
In 2016, Fleetwood and Burnley-based Lancashire Waste Recycling (LWR), who specialise in waste-to-fuel production, had to comply with strengthened Environmental Agency (EA) regulations.
and suppression system, LWR Director Jim Entwistle decided to invest.
He said: “Although there are other systems on the market which could have solved our issue, the Helios System was the only one ready and installed for us to view.
“My gut feeling was, if I was going to install a system, it had to be a system I have looked at and seen in person.
“We had no choice about installing a system at our new Burnley site, as it was a condition of our EA permit that we installed an adequate fi re suppression and detection system.
“We had a choice to install a cheaper alternative which might not work, or install a Helios system which would.”
The company were being pushed into a corner by insurance companies and the EA. As a result, LWR needed a fi re suppression and detection system to provide continuity of business to their customers, and after viewing the Helios Systems Ltd early warning fi re detection
The modular system, which was installed at LWR’s Fleetwood site in three weeks, is made up of two cannon turrets producing foam or water. The performance of these particular cannons can reach 60-metre distances with a 95% effi ciency, therefore covering an entire area with one cannon.
Each cannon is independently controlled by a PYROsmart camera, which guides it

to the potential ignition source.
When the PYROsmart early warning detection system identifi es a heat source, it notifi es the Rosenbauer system precisely where danger has been detected and directs a cannon to that specifi c area.
The cannon then suppresses that area over a three-minute period, or until the heat source has been suppressed – while PYROsmart’s intelligent IR camera scans the remaining area for further heat spots.
The advantage of a targeted system is the
