Life's Energy: the WID compliant biomass experts

THE world of renewables never runs smoothly. Diff erent local authorities, installation companies, and various industry procedures can make an installation through to registration a tumultuous ride.

The White Paper considering the OFGEM Eligible heat uses makes nervous reading for businesses considering the merits of a drying fl oor.

It is no secret that some members of the waste industry use their waste wood as a fuel source, which is more than acceptable, with the heat being used to blow air through the drying fl oor. Again, this is more than reasonable when drying RDF to make it lighter to reduce gate fees. However, some are abusing the ethical and Non-Domestic RHI guidelines to disperse the hot air into fresh air. As long as they are clocking up the kW’s on the heat meter to obtain the £83 a tonne, does it matter?

Well clearly it does (not wanting to sound supercilious), but it is morally wrong and disregards the current policies. More still, it has threatened the eligible heat use for economically justifi able heating requirements, such as drying of material for animal bedding or crop drying.

BY SHARON LESTER, LIFE’S ENERGY LTD

We think the main concern is not “if”, but “when”, and this paper has been in circulation since March 2016. However, it has come back into the forefront because the deadline for responding was the 3rd of October.

The race is now on to beat the possible deadline of 31st March 2018 for the worst-case scenario that all drying fl oors usage will be omitted from Eligible Heat Use.

Life’s Energy are pleased to show that in most revised projections (of proposed installations that would receive no RHI tariff for the drying fl oor), it will only add another 12-18 months to achieve a return on investment. Also heating onsite offi ces or buildings ensure 35% tier 1 of the RHI guaranteeing a payment of over £90,000 per annum for the 20-year duration.

We are hopeful that OFGEM will allow drying fl oors for legitimate commercial use, and waste companies that can provide proof of what they are drying, should then be permitted to claim their RHI.

Here at Life’s Energy we take all possibilities into consideration to provide a projection of fi nancial returns that will come into fruition.
