D-Day veteran who had a fi tting send off in style
A CREMATORIUM in Cambridge held an unusual funeral for a remarkable man after the coffin of D-Day veteran, Arthur Jupp, 91, arrived on the back of a 13-tonne skip lorry last month, writes SAMUEL McKEOWN.
Former Royal Navy serviceman Arthur, from Dry Drayton, died on September 16 and the popular character certainly did not want the day be a gloomy aff air.
Fitting send-off for great man
Arthur, often helped his son Daniel run the family business, Dans Skips Ltd, so the family decided it was fi tting to securely chain his coffi n on a 13-tonne skip lorry, and slowly drive up the A14 towards the crematorium.
There, 60 relatives and friends assembled to say their fi nal farewells to the man who had an amazing life and was a great community character.
Among them were a group of former colleagues from the London Fire Brigade, with whom Arthur served for more than 30 years.
One of them, Jeff Beaton, said: “Arthur had a real sense of humour, so he would have loved this. He was a genuine one-off.”
Son Gary said: “I don’t suppose there’s even been a funeral where the hearse was a skip lorry.
“We didn’t want a dull, traditional hearse.” FIRBER
