The joy of movement


As we kick off a new year, Bryony Andrews, editor of Park World’s sister publication, GlobalAmusements&Play, caught up with Raine Kajastila, CEO of Valo Motion, via Zoom to find out how the Finland- based company is combining movement and games to help the ‘Fortnite generation’ discover the joy of movement...


Can you give me a brief overview of Valo Motion and its product and service off ering?

Essentially, Valo Motion exists to create groundbreaking experiences that empower everybody and help people fi nd the joy of movement. We create an experience where players feel they are actually part of the game, controlling it with the choices they make. We have two main products, ValoClimb and ValoJump, which combine sports and games in a fun but challenging way. ValoClimb is the world’s fi rst interactive gaming platform for climbing walls. We use body tracking and projectors that immerse the player into the game itself. Then we have ValoJump, where players are jumping on a trampoline and seeing their image on screen in the game. You basically become a real life superhero with powers - you can jump higher than a building and do amazing things that you can’t do in real life. We also offer support to make the games work around the world - Cloud service and remote support mean our customers can trust that the systems will operate smoothly. With the systems connected to the internet, we can also provide new games and system updates with ease. Most importantly, players can send a video to themselves and share it on social media - branded with the operator’s

What makes your products stand out? The best thing about both products is that they provide healthy and active fun. It’s also key that they are suitable for a wide range of people - you might fi nd them in a family entertainment centre for toddlers or equally in a climbing gym for professional adults. You can play them on your own or you can play them in a group with friends - it’s not just engaging for the players, it’s also engaging for the audience watching. There are currently nine games for ValoClimb and six games for ValoJump, but really every game might have hundreds of different levels and outcomes dependent on the user and their choices and performance. Our products and games are designed to help build skills - some games improve your jumping style, some keep you jumping for longer. JumpBall, our newest game, sees players interact with a virtual ball, meaning you have to learn to control your whole body while you jump, or you can compete with friends in a game like Hullaballoon [balloon popping game for ValoClimb]. You can also share your videos on social media afterwards. Birthday parties are particularly important for FECs, so we have added extras like personalised birthday messages that pop up when
