Attendance at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort fell to 6.1 million in 2016, from a record high of 7.1 million in fiscal 2014. At the tail-end of 2017, a multi-year expansion was announced, and IP-driven additions to the park over the next six years are expected to boost visitor numbers and spending. Park World reports
ong Kong Disneyland, which is co-owned by Disney and the government of Hong Kong, kicked off its USD$1.4-billion (10.9 billion Hong Kong dollar)
expansion of the 11-acre resort in October last year. Work is scheduled to run from 2018 to 2023, and additions will feature a host of Disney’s best-loved brands and characters - including themed areas based around Marvel superhero characters and on the hit movie Frozen. The first of the planned developments, opening later in
2018, is based around Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 2016 hit Moana, which made almost 640 million worldwide at the box office. A themed entertainment venue will be located in Adventureland, one of the park’s seven lands, and will feature a lively, atmospheric stage show and include the opportunity for guests to meet with the newest Disney heroine. An immersive Frozen-themed area, meanwhile, where guests will experience the characters and stories from the film among other attractions, has yet to be given an opening date. In January 2017, the resort opened its first Marvel-themed
ride, the ‘Iron Man Experience,’ which includes a ride simulator that takes visitors on a virtual flight over Hong Kong
