£400k investment in Merlin UK attractions

Mayan-themed resort planned on the Mexican Riviera Maya

A

n $840 million theme park and resort project, Amikoo, will be built on Mexico’s Mayan Riviera between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. The first phase will be completed this year. Developed by Grupo Gala and Grupo IUSA, the concept

is based on Mayan cosmogony and will showcase the cultural, natural, historical and recreational wealth of Mexico. The first phase of the project will be the theme park. Its 24 attractions include the Amikoo

Surf Spot, a giant wave pool and artificial beach; Fly Over Mexico, a panoramic flight simulator by Brogent/Vekoma; a submarine simulator called Mexico Seas that will show guests Mexican sea life and ‘Pirates of Bacalar’, an immersive tunnel attraction by Simworx (see page 10).

The second phase will include hotel rooms, plus four distinct zones: a jungle-themed area;

a recreation of an ancient Mayan city; an interactive exhibition of Mayan anthropology and archaeology and Amikoo Land, a family focused area.

Merlin Entertainments has revealed details of two new features to launch at Sea Life Manchester and Legoland Discovery Centre Manchester, in the north of the UK, this Easter. 360 degree experience ‘The Lair

of the Giant Crab’ will be unveiled at Sea Life Manchester, featuring giant Japanese spider crab, which can grow to up to 18 feet from claw to claw, and a giant Pacific octopus, nicknamed the ‘Einstein of the Ocean’ owing to its highly intelligent brain powers. At the Legoland Discovery Centre,

meanwhile, an all-new interactive experience, ‘Space Mission’, will allow aspiring space stars to build their own Lego rockets and explore weird and wonderful alien landscapes, before taking command at Lego’s mission control base and blasting a shuttle into space.

New announcements for Mega Parc upgrade

Canadian indoor amusement park Mega Parc, an Oxford Properties Group, is undergoing an infrastructure overhaul to support a number of new attractions including the Cloud Coaster by Extreme Engineering; the world’s largest indoor ice skating rink; a hub-less Ferris Wheel from Larson International, plus 15 more. Mega Parc will be investing $52 million into the park. The focal point of the park will be the Cloud Coaster by Extreme Engineering

soaring guests through a hub-less Ferris Wheel - the first roller coaster in North America to do so. Riders will start 60 feet (18 m) above the ground and rocket across 405 feet (123 m) of track. The coaster will zoom in-and-out of a Ferris Wheel, providing a birds-eye view of the entire park. This particular coaster layout will include two lifts, travel speeds over 25 mph (40 kph) and a new cart design. The attraction expects to crank out over 120 riders per hour on a single rider format.
