BETTER CHANGE
Apprenticeships make the gambling industry a more attractive proposition to its potential work force with structured learning on the job and also to gambling operators because for those who contribute to the levy the learning is free and there is reduced tax paid on placements. Candidates will receive learning from certified training providers and receive a recognised qualification at the end. The level 4 apprenticeship is equal to A-levels in the UK and we plan to provide graduate and post-graduate qualifications in the future through introducing levels 5 and 6. Gambling operators in the UK will be able to start candidates on the apprenticeship programme as soon as October 2025. For more details do get in touch with us by visiting
www.better-change.org For organisations outside of the UK the learning materials will still be available however the costs will not be subsidised. We would love to explore any opportunities in which there may be schemes that provide apprenticeship programmes overseas so please do get in touch.
industry. There are regulatory compliance apprenticeships too but these are more focussed on banking and the wider financial sector. Back in 2023 Better Change noticed this disparity and thought that not only should an industry as vast as ours that will undoubtedly contribute significant amounts to the levy benefit from it, but also it puts the gambling industry on the map in terms of somewhere people can build a career. Seeing this as a win-win we approached IFATE the governing body for
apprenticeships in the UK to make our case. Sadly what we thought would be an easy process was anything but! There are a vast amount of apprenticeships already active in the UK and to add further to that we would need to have a very compelling argument that firstly, we are bringing something new, secondly it would have sufficient demand and finally it is not already covered by an
existing course for which an adaptation could be made. This is where the casino industry stepped up, not just financially (making an application is very expensive) but also with their time and expertise creating a trailblazer group to liaise with the governing bodies and develop what an apprenticeship programme would look like. Bringing in expert consultancy as well as certified learning partners was also key to make a strong case for gambling and after two years, numerous meetings, negotiations and applications we were granted the opportunity to create a Level 4 Regulatory Compliance Apprenticeship (Gambling). As stated, before an apprenticeship being available for our industry that is specific to our needs has huge advantages. As well as the opportunity to take advantage of the contribution that the industry pays into the gambling levy this will increase the pool of talent from which the gambling industry can draw from. Apprenticeships are a well- established pathway into work providing skills-based learning on the job. Traditionally we think of apprenticeships as school leavers who would prefer to get into the workplace than pursue further education, but today people from all walks of life take advantage of apprenticeship schemes as well as school leavers. These could be people already in roles that want to improve their skills, those returning to work from a long absence, people looking for a change in career or leaving service in the military Which supports the industry if building a more diverse workforce.

Finally, we would like to say a huge thank you to Genting Casino, The Hippodrome Casino London, Les Ambassadeurs and Metropolitan Gaming for their support of the programme. Without their generosity with time, resources and expertise the creation of the apprenticeship programme would simply not have been possible.
