Editor’s Letter H

Editor’s Letter

ello readers! I’d like to introduce myself as the new managing editor of Sign Update. I have recently joined the team and will work alongside Cameron Beech, who joins as assistant editor. Together, our aim is to

bring to you the latest news, views and advice as well as interesting, insightful and informative interviews from key names and companies throughout the signage industry.

We are pleased to share with you our very fi rst issue of Sign Update. In this issue, I hit the open road and paid a visit to Epson UK’s headquarters in Hemel Hempstead. I interviewed Phil McMullin about the company’s philosophy of Kaizen and its continuously improving print technology. Also in this issue, Cameron chatted with Paul and Julia Hughes of Western Signs to fi nd out more about their expansion into the creative sphere of sign making, and I also fi red some questions at Lewis Evans of Vivid Laminating Technologies regarding the company’s latest product developments.

Now, for just a little bit of info on myself and Cameron, to reassure you that Sign Update is in good hands.

My background lies within the garment decoration industry, having edited the leading title in this sector, Printwear & Promotion, for the last decade. I’m already semi-familiar with the sign market given the overlap in industries, so the transition to editing Sign Update has been relatively seamless. As a recent English Literature BA graduate from Durham University, Cameron’s experience comes from her two years of work on the university’s magazine and 11 months as a head editor, specialising in arts and culture. Being completely new to the sign market, she is ready to learn everything the industry has to offer.

Myself and Cameron hope that you see a positively energising switch up in content in this issue and enjoy reading it! It was a joy to put together and learn about the industry as we go. We have only just dipped our toes in and hope to expand our knowledge and understanding further, as we talk to more and more of you as the months go by.

Besides this new-look magazine, we also have plans to refresh the Sign Update website (www.signupdate.co.uk) and give it a little makeover. So keep your eyes peeled! The keen-eyed among you will also have noticed the launch of The Sign Industry Awards on our front cover. We hope as many of you as possible will get involved. To fi nd out more take a look at pages 22 and 23.

If you’d like to say hello, or inform us of some exciting company news please do send myself and Cameron an email. We can be reached on editor@signupdate.co.uk. We look forward to hearing from you!

We both hope you enjoy this month’s issue. Melanie SUBSCRIBE
