How can tech providers encourage end users to be more sustainable? Lead by example. Tere are many things we are doing at Tech Data, and we’d urge partners to do as much as they can within their own organisations. Across TD SYNNEX and at Tech Data UK and Ireland, we want


to move as quickly as we can towards NZC. A full audit of our carbon footprint has recently been completed and we are now working with experts in the field to look at the ways in which we can reduce our emissions. Tere are some areas in which we are in control and can make


real changes, such as energy usage, commuting to work and business travel. Tere are others where we are more reliant on our partners and in particular, our couriers we work with to ship products to all corners of the UK and Ireland. We are already talking to them to understand their plans and look at ways to optimise shipments.


Can you tell us more about the business prospects for recycling and re-using of IT equipment? Te prospects for this part of our business growing are strong. We’d expect it to grow very quickly over the next couple of years and to remain an important part of our business. Not only does recycling, refurbishment, and responsible asset disposal make financial sense for customers, it is also the right thing to do. All businesses are having to act on sustainability. Indeed, it could


become a negative differentiator for any channel company not to have a strong NZC policy and target. Also, sustainability matters to customers and to colleagues and it’s important to demonstrate you are taking every positive step you can.


How does Tech Data work with partners to enable end-user customers to extend the lifecycle of their IT products and find really competitive trade-in options? We make trade-in and recycling/ refurbishment options available for all kinds of equipment – from mobile phones and tablets to servers and storage. We actively encourage our partners to explore those options with every customer and we make them clearly visible on our InTouch e-commerce platform. We also make it easy for partners to obtain valuations and quotations for equipment. We have a specialist team dedicated to refurbishment and recycling services and they can provide all the assistance that partners might need on any trade-in enquiry. We also work with partners to help

customers extend the lifecycle of their equipment. Tis can be done through preventative maintenance services and by upgrading or updating systems. In some situations, the addition of extra memory or faster storage, or a simple firmware upgrade, can make all the difference. In addition, we work with a number of enterprise vendors – such as Cisco with its Refresh programme – to make their refurbished and approved products available as an alternative to brand new equipment. Tis can be a very good option for some customers.


How does this offer a better return on investment while moving towards their sustainability goals? If you can extend the lifecycle of your IT equipment, this is going to be more environmentally friendly. It is also going to save you money, so it makes sense on both counts. When you DO need to update equipment, trading-in old kit means you need to invest less; and knowing that it is going to be properly managed at the end of its lifecycle means you can move towards your NZC goals. It’s a virtuous cycle and one that is going to grow massively in size and momentum over the next few years.


What can a smaller partner/reseller/retailer do about addressing sustainability in their business right away? How will recycling and asset disposal help them? Tey can start to think and talk about it and try to work out what their Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions might be. Tey can then start making plans to reduce those emissions. Enlisting specialist help is a good idea. Tere are small consultants springing up everywhere and a lot of information can be found online. Partners will find, as we have, that there are some actions they can take themselves and some questions they will need to ask their suppliers. Recycling and IT asset disposal certainly has a role to play for


them as well. Having an end-of-life, product recycling scheme is a specific category within Scope 3 of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, so any reseller who can demonstrate capability in this area will make a positive impact to their Scope 3 emissions footprint. Perhaps more importantly, it will help them to help their customers achieve their sustainability targets.
