Industry Roundtable

of resellers with free access to an extensive menu of self-serve sustainability focused marketing campaigns and access to a library of sustainability training. Tis was a significant move as it came just aſter they’d signed a ground-breaking agreement with Circular Computing to make remanufactured, carbon-neutral, laptops an integral part of its product offering. In fact, Circular Computing (along with Fairphone) was the first vendor to on-board its sustainability message to the platform. “More recently, we entered a partnership with Techies Go Green

(TGG) to provide access to their reseller signatories with 500 free sustainability focused contacts (end-users) each. “And, of course, we continue to deliver a wide range of

sustainability focused programmes, promotions, and initiatives for partners throughout the channel.”

Matt Frank, Ancoris: “Ancoris has established ‘Te A Team’, also known as the Employee Resource Group for CSR to get everyone across the business more involved in sustainability. To date, this has had a great impact, with the initiative helping employees feel empowered to create a change and make a difference within both the company and their local community. Te team recently spent the day helping rebuild and restore a recreational area in Bracknell. In addition, we host mental health charity events and get involved with Christmas present distributions to less fortunate children, which has been hugely rewarding for everyone involved.”

How is the tech channel currently contributing towards negative environmental impact and how can this be addressed? Paul Thompson, Consenna: “Our friends at Px3, an IT consulting company specialising in sustainability, have presented countless pieces of data pointing to the negative environmental impact of the tech channel, but as is oſten the case, the simplest piece of data is the one with the most impact. Tat is why, on numerous occasions, we’ve quoted that the IT industry is responsible for 5% of all global carbon emissions – that says it all. “Addressing this and turning things around isn’t difficult though

and the entire channel has a role to play. “Whether it’s greening-up the manufacturing process, ensuring

the responsible disposal of end-of-life kit, or even pushing for more remanufacturing where possible, there are some key milestones in the lifecycle of a device where positive outputs can be realised. Add to this the huge amount of education and training that a platform such as Carbon provides, and there really is little excuse for the channel not stepping up.”

Matt Frank, Ancoris: “As businesses and individuals generate more data than ever before, the channel industry is faced with the challenge of mitigating the impact data centres and other IT Infrastructure have on the environment and on natural resource consumption. Te world’s data centres reportedly now use more electricity than the United Kingdom’s total electricity consumption, to provide the power and cooling needed to maintain temperature- controlled environments that function 24/7. Te number of data centres worldwide has also grown significantly and the amount of energy used by data centres continues to double every four years,

resulting in the IT sector having the fastest-growing energy footprint globally.”

Do you feel the channel has a key responsibility to help towards the reduction of our carbon footprint? If so, how? Paul Thompson, Consenna: “Absolutely! At least 60% of customers are willing to pay more for a sustainable product or service and resellers reside in the enviable space where they’re communicating with those customers, all day, every day. Tere’s no excuse for them not conveying the information that can make a real difference. “Customers seek help from resellers so that they can make informed

decisions, so whether it’s advice on the options for end-of-life recycling, demonstrating how some devices are better environmentally than others, or providing tangible, real-life comparisons of the impact that a particular purchasing decision will have, there is little comparable to the potential influence that resellers can wield.”

Matt Frank, Ancoris: “Many organisations don’t have the financial resources available for extensive sustainability initiatives for their data centres and wider technology operations. Tere are, however, measures that the channel can put in place relatively easily to reduce our carbon footprint. Te biggest opportunity lies with Cloud computing. Choosing a public Cloud provider like Google that is focused on going beyond net-zero, is a relatively easy ‘win’. A key factor in the reduction of CO2 emissions has been the consolidation of on-premise data centres into larger-scale Cloud-based facilities. Cloud Providers’ data centres leverage economies of scale to manage power consumption efficiently, optimise cooling, deploy power-efficient servers at scale, and maximise server utilisation.”

Does your company provide products or services that if adopted can help run a more efficient business if so what and how? Paul Thompson, Consenna: “Sustainability is integral to Consenna’s strategy, and we are proud to set the benchmark across the industry. “In many respects, our Carbon platform was long-overdue when

we launched it last summer – the channel had rested on its laurels for far too long and we decided enough was enough. Now, we’ve equipped resellers with the ability to drive real change in the IT sustainability landscape. “Not only can they rapidly market sustainability messages directly

to prospects, all whilst reflecting their own brand but, importantly, performance data is shared to support follow up and drive sales conversions – it’s a win:win all round.”

Matt Frank, Ancoris: “At the beginning of the year, we launched our new Google Cloud service, Ancoris GreenLab. Tis is an advanced solution that meaningfully contributes to organisations’ sustainability
