Martin Macleod, CEO of ILM Highland explains how a new service launched by a social enterprise and charity in the Scottish Highlands will refurbish unused and unwanted laptops – converting them into affordable, high-quality Chromebooks.

I

LM Highland will sell the refurbished Chromebooks starting at £70 from its Alness store, providing affordable computing equipment to consumers in the north of Scotland – with plans to

introduce online sales in the new year. Martin Macleod, CEO of ILM Highland had this to say.

Exciting news about ILM Highland and its launch of a new service to refurbish unused and unwanted laptops, tell us more about how it plans to convert them into affordable, high quality Chromebooks? In December 2021 we launched our Laptops to Chromebooks project, which involves refurbishing and upcycling 800 unused and unwanted laptops. By converting these into high- quality Chromebooks we are able to reduce the amount of electronics going to landfill, and provide affordable devices to those who need them. ILM Highland is an independent charity and social enterprise,

providing home improvement, electrical recycling, and retail services to the Scottish Highlands. Everything we do is guided by three core principles: • Reduce waste • Protect the environment • Support vulnerable people to live at home Our home improvement services provide free assistance to the

most vulnerable in our community, enabling them to maintain their independence.

28 | May 2022 To support these services, we offer an extensive electrical recycling

service as well as selling quality and affordable new and refurbished appliances in our online and Alness retail stores.

What other benefits does the scheme offer? As well as protecting the environment and funding ILM Highland’s charitable services, the Laptops to Chromebooks project allows us to provide access to IT and computing to those who may otherwise not be able to afford it. Low income households and students can benefit from high

quality – yet extremely affordable – Chromebooks, which will enable them to get online.

How much carbon emissions could this potentially save? Te project will save a total of 26 tonnes of carbon emissions. Tat’s the equivalent of 13,000 CO2 fire extinguishers, 26 return flights from Paris to New York, or fully charging 3,162,718 smartphones.

What steps are taken to refurbish the laptops? Te first step is to perform a visual inspection of the device to ensure that it is in saleable condition – or to find out where we need to carry out repairs. Aſter performing

a pre-PAT test, the device is wiped and an up-to-date Chrome OS is installed. Once all functions of the device are checked, it is cleaned, PAT tested and prepared for sale.
