INTERVIEW
The Bike Matrix team at Eurobike 2024
We won a Eurobike Award in the Digital Solutions Category.
By the time Eurobike 2025 arrived, we had demonstrated compatibility for brake pads, brake rotors, front and rear wheels, wheelsets, chains, cassettes, headsets, bottom brackets, cranksets, chainrings, front and rear axles, for both standard and custom bikes.
As a startup, how have you funded Bike Matrix? If we talk about funding in numbers, in August of 2023 we took on NZD$240k investment (angels and private equity). Christmas 2023 saw us receive a ‘New to R&D’ grant from the NZ government through Callaghan Innovation (40% of approved R&D costs valued at NZD$180k over 2 years). In 2024, we raised NZD$2m from Private Equity within the bike industry.
Our next funding round will likely be in mid-2026. By the time this happens, we will have case studies with industry-recognised and respected retailers, one of whom, based in Europe, is known outside of its home market. Naturally enough, serving retailers across Europe means we offer multi-language support. I should also mention here that we already have Bike Matrix live in the US, UK, Finland, NZ, Germany and the UAE.

Product development-wise, can you share a few more details; What will we see added to Bike Matrix in the coming year? We’ve a number of things in development, some of which come as a result of great beta testing insights. On top of finishing Compatibility for all ‘major components’ of the bike, we’ll focus on in-store integrations with ePOS and Workshop Portals, delivering efficiencies and breaking down the barriers to entry for staff. We have plans to build like-for- like compatibility for use in B2B dealer portals, where a retailer can search for matching products to a known SKU. We’ll further enhance our reporting capabilities to present deeper metrics to our partners, providing valuable, relevant insights to retailers, component brands and bike brands that collaborate with us.
I mentioned earlier that we’d found the limits of Google
Sheets, so we’re building a new Master Data Management platform with Customer and Manufacturer portals to improve the Data Enrichment workflows. As we grow, so will our team, with plans to add more
firepower to our Data Enrichment team, Business Development, and Software team. 2026 will be the year we ‘Go To Market’. With limited effort on marketing to date, we’ll actively seek new customers and help them reap the rewards of early adoption, before Bike Matrix becomes the new way everyone shops for parts.
