INTERVIEW
Not hard to see why this would be valuable across the entire industry, from the buying public to global brands and everyone in between. And that’s the reaction we’ve had from a select group of large retailers, who’ve already seen actual business benefits - when you talk ‘money’ people take note. It’s no longer ‘data’ and ‘tech’ - it’s revenue uplift, it’s cost reduction, it’s cashflow optimisation, it’s buying decision influencing. When you know what your customers search for and buy (or don’t), you take the guesswork out of future stock decision-making.
To give some sense of scale, let’s talk numbers. How many products are now live on Bike Matrix? 85k Bikes, 150k components, 100+ component brands on board. For context, we currently see 260k compatible requests over a 7-day timeframe. I can tell you that we see 37,000 parts compatibility searches a week for Canyon and more than 42,000 searches a week for Specialized. Naturally enough, these numbers get people’s attention. When you tell a business you can more than double their online sales conversion rate for parts, and massively reduce returns - that opens a lot of inquisitive conversations.
And you’ve arrived at this point in two years? Not quite, although if you take the debut of our Minimum Viable Product (MVP), then, yes. Today we’re a team of 10. We started out as two co-founders, Lyndal and I, and that became three with the arrival of Adam Barnes as our tech co-founder. I’m getting a bit ahead of myself here. To timeline the early stages:
August 2023, we took on NZD$240k investment (angels and private equity)
Lyndal and I go full-time on Bike Matrix (Adam Barnes remains three days)
November 2023, we went ‘live’ with our first iteration, ‘Brake Pad Compatibility’
25,000 bikes enriched with just enough data to assess compatibility for brake pads.
cycleways.co.nz and
frictivemtb.co.nz were our Beta test partners Taipei 2024 saw us expand capability significantly, with the Brake Pad Compatibility now enriched with tyres and tubes, a straightforward addition that belies the amount of work required. Good news for us, a host of component manufacturers saw Bike Matrix, recognised what they saw, and opened meaningful conversations. Shortly after, we had more than 50 component brands on
www.bikebiz.com
board, and more than 20,000 bikes enriched to ‘Phase 2’. An ever-expanding data set means exploring new options for how to improve User Experience and future-proof the solution. Redesigning Bike Selector 2.0 and Bike Lounge saw us also add the Shopify App to the Marketplace. It’s around this time that we then added brake rotor, front wheel, rear wheel and wheelset compatibility.
Eurobike 2024 was our ‘launch’ (so to speak) where we demonstrated brake pads, brake rotor, front wheel, rear wheel, wheelset, Chain and Cassette.
