Shopfloor TAKE A TOWN Devon 42

Sales skills: 5/5

For this issue, ERT’s team of mystery shoppers visited, and assessed, eight stores across Crediton, Exeter and Exmouth in Devon

H Carter & Sons, Rolle Street, Exmouth

Located on the corner of Rolle Street and High Street in the heart of Exmouth, this is a family- run business, established in 1913. After sweltering in the hot temperatures, enough was enough, and I wanted to buy a new fan. Inside the store, Edward said that the Dyson model (AM07) was priced at £269, which was discounted from the usual price of £349 – he said that this was the cheapest price for this product in the UK on that day. There were two Igenix models on display – the DF0037 and the DF0038, which were priced at £60 and £80 respectively.

Edward explained that the more expensive Igenix model features Amazon Alexa, so users can use the virtual assistant technology to control the product. Both models feature 50W of power with three speed settings – high, medium and low – as well as three breeze modes – normal, natural and sleep.

Edward said the display panel will show the ambient temperature, allowing you to accurately control the temperature of the room. The Dyson model and DF0037 model were both switched on and Edward demonstrated the fans.

WINNING INDEPENDENT

Store presentation: 5/5

Total score: 10/10

Edward’s simple demonstrations of both models were very good and the mention of the reduced Dyson price was an attempt to close the sale. The large store was well presented, and having the fans at the front of the shop was a great move.
