A SIGN OF DESIGN Home Entertainment

Design seals the deal 22

in hi-fi and home entertainment

In today’s retail environment, it’s not just functionality that sells products. They have to look good too, particularly on high ticket items. Steve May throws a spotlight on the state of the art in CE product design.

the latest home entertainment hardware. Ubiquitous connectivity and Artificial Intelligence (AI) may dominate the CE landscape, but few would argue against the importance of high design when it comes to fuelling consumer desire. From audiophile Hi-Fi to everyday gadgetry, manufacturers continue to pay homage to classic designs. Bang & Olufsen is synonymous with high

intage vibes, with a modern twist. It’s a tried and tested formula, but one that still seems to resonate with buyers and brands alike, at least when it comes to selling through

design, often applying it with uncompromising ingenuity. Consider its Beosystem 9000c music system, the second launch from the brand’s Recreated Classics program. Limited to just 200 units worldwide, every Beosystem 9000c is built around a skilfully restored Beosound 9000 CD player, sourced and refurbished by B&O technicians in Denmark. Given the original Beosound 9000 was

created in 1996 by Industrial Designer David Lewis, supplies are clearly going to be scarce. Extrapolating on the player’s original design, the brand has added a Cosmic Black finish on the aluminium back plate, along with a new

control panel; each element has been treated and finished at B&O’s Factory 5 in Denmark. “We wanted to enhance the graphic edge of Beosound 9000 whilst maintaining the integrity of the original design,” explains Tiina Kierysch, B&O’s Head of Design. Ms Kierysch says the addition of the black finish really helps CDs stand out, which was always the original design intention.

Of course, beauty isn’t just skin deep. In addition to playing old school CDs, the new Beosound 9000 is equipped for all required streaming duties via Bluetooth 5.0, and supports for Airplay 2 and Chromecast.
