Woodcote Green has historically recorded a massive stockturn fi gure, which we have always had diffi culty understanding. The stockturn is gradually coming down now to a more realistic level, but it’s still top of the class. The past fi ve years have seen spectacular growth in performance: sales up by 50% from £10.8m to £16.2m (that’s an average annual growth rate more than 8%, and from a single centre); gross profi t tripled; and operating and net margins doubled. Staff costs are falling steadily, and are now well below the market average; and the return on capital is enormous. Overall, it’s no surprise that Woodcote Green is consistently at the top of the DIY Week Index table.

Wyevale, the UK’s largest garden centre operator, is in the process of getting smaller. From a peak of 147 centres, it is now down to 126, and it is expected more sales will be confi rmed before long, either to other garden centre chains or to developers. Its recent past has been one of steady sales growth, but the accounts make it diffi cult to track the profi t performance with any confi dence. Stockturn suff ered badly during 2014 and 2015; it has since recovered somewhat, but is still off the pace compared to the market average. Staff costs have always been lower than average, and the return on capital and DIY Week Index fi gures have of course fl uctuated along with the operating profi t performance.
