Builders merchant Jewson has launched a recruitment drive across Farnborough and the surrounding areas as it continues work on its purpose-built ‘Branch of the Future’, due to open in the town later this year. Branch manager, Domi Scrivener, said: “We want to do things differently with the new Branch of the Future in Farnborough. Joseph Parr trucks go electric

Builders merchant Joseph Parr (Alco) Ltd has taken delivery of its first 100% electric truck. The environmentally-

friendly vehicle was part funded by a grant from Bradford Council, which will monitor the truck’s impact closely - via data from Volvo Connect, the manufacturer’s fleet management system - as it tries to cut carbon emissions in the city’s Clean Air Zone and wider areas.

Michael Beaumont, joint managing director at Joseph Parr (Alco), said: “Regulations across the industry are changing and we want to ensure we are ahead of the curve in terms of new green technologies. When the decision was made to go down the electric route, Volvo Trucks was the obvious choice. We had one Volvo on the fleet already and they are clearly leading the way when it comes to electric. It has been making deliveries for the last few weeks and is performing as planned - I’m really happy with how it’s going. “Our customers can choose the truck for their particular delivery if they so wish. I believe this truck demonstrates our commitment to reducing emissions. It also sets us apart from our competitors.”

A newly-installed 43kW AC charger at the company’s depot allows the truck to charge overnight.

the rest. SR Timber achieves Sun Safe workplace accreditation

SR Timber has been awarded a Sun Safe Workplace Accreditation by SKCIN, a national charity that

provides training to raise awareness of skin cancer prevention and the importance of early detection to high-risk audiences.

Solar UV radiation emitted by the Sun’s energy is classified as a known human carcinogen, responsible for up to 90% of all skin cancer cases. This puts outdoor workers in one of the highest risk groups for skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK, with recent statistics highlighting that 1 in 4 men and 1 in 5 women will develop the disease and that outdoor workers are, on average, at a 60% greater risk.

Shaun Revill, trading director from SR Timber, said: “The health and safety of our employees is paramount. We have both a moral and legal obligation to address all aspects of health and safety in the workplace – that includes addressing the known risks associated with repeated and long-term exposure to solar UV radiation.

“By participating in the Sun Safe Workplaces programme, we have been able to assess the level of risk to our staff and implement a robust sun protection policy to help protect them and reduce their risk of the UK’s most common cancer.”
