In 1965, John Nicholls opened a builders merchant in Banbury, followed seven years later by a plumbing and heating branch in Cherwell Street, when Nicholls’ sons Andrew and Philip joined the business. Within four years it had out-grown its premises and moved to Overthorpe Road in Banbury. Over the years, the company expanded, acquiring the J&B’s Plumbing & Heating business in Dorset in 2014, opening the Long Hanborough Distribution Depot, and, in 2022, a new Plumbing & Heating branch in Towcester, the first expansion into Northamptonshire. Two further sites are planned.

Formed in 1967, John A Stephens is a family-owned and run builders merchants, operating from a seven acre site in central Nottingham, where the head office is located. There is also a second branch, south of the River Trent, in West Bridgford. The company was an early adopter of solar panels and energy efficient products. JT Atkinson is a family owned independent builders’ merchant established in 1860 as a roofing company, before becoming a builders merchant in the early 1900s.
It has 37 branches - six trading as Builders Supply (Kendal) and one as Hathaway Timber - across Tyne and Wear, Durham, Teesside, North Yorkshire and Cumbria, supplying materials to customers across the North of England.
