April 2023 A supplement to builders merchants journal 11 BMJ Index
The BMJ Index is a fairly arbitrary way of assessing the overall health and competitiveness of a company. It is calculated by multiplying three key ratios: year-on-year sales growth, stockturn, and operating margin. Therefore if any one of the three is negative – ie sales declined year-on- year, or the company recorded an operating loss – the result will be a negative Index score.
Applying our policy of excluding the top five and bottom five in the table, and thus focusing on the middle ground, the average BMJ Index score over the five years running up to this year showed a steady decline. The 2018 Trailblazers survey (reflecting 2016 accounts) showed an average Index score of 275. In 2019 (2017 accounts), it dropped slightly to 249. 2020 (2018 accounts) saw a further small decline to 228, and the 2021 survey (2019 accounts) recorded a sharp drop to an average of 85. Then Trailblazers 2022 reflected the lockdown year of 2020, and the average Index score plunged to just 34 – the lowest on record. But that was then, and this is now: the average BMJ Index score for 2023 smashed all previous records at 1,038. We’ll say it just once more: this is a very, very good time to be a builders merchant!
