TRAILBLAZERS I
INDEPENDENT BUILDERS MERCHANT GROUP BUILDERS MERCHANTS: A-Z Independent Builders Merchant Group
IBMG is the largest building materials distributor in the South of England, formed through more than 20 acquisitions made since the start of 2018. While IBMG has retained many of the strong local brands across its business, it operates as one integrated company led by a single management team. The group has 172 branches, revenues in excess of more than £650m, and over 2,200 employees. Its reach extends from Cornwall to Kent and comprises builders’ merchants, electrical wholesalers, plumbers’ merchants, kitchen and bathroom showrooms, roofing merchants, a timber processing site, and a dedicated ecommerce business.
Via a combination of
acquisitions and organic growth, IBMG has grown from 15 branches and revenues of £67m in March 2018, under-pinned by support and investment from their strategic partner. In 2022, the group added a number of businesses and branches across its network, starting with the 10-branch Dougfield Plumbers Supplies Limited in January, expanding its network of specialist plumbing and heating merchants into Wales and across the South West.

In February 2022, the group acquired Pennyhill Timber Ltd (Pennyhill), expanding its specialist timber division into Surrey. In April, the group made a series of moves to expand the Grant & Stone electrical division, opening branches in Acton, West London, Bracknell, Romford, Brentwood and Swindon. In May, it bought Merkko Builders Merchants Ltd expanding its network of builders merchants into Oxfordshire and Berkshire, and Independent Roofing Supplies, a local, independent roofing merchant in the South East with three locations in Bexhill, Newhaven and Hove. Wantage Builders Merchants Limited joined the group in June, and there were new branches for Buildit builders merchant, located on Dean Road, Yate and for RGB in Truro in the Autumn. CRS’ 13th branch opened in Minehead this January.
Figures: Companies House. The latest figures from Grant & Stone are used to illustrate their growth & realtive contribution to the wider IBMG total. Year-ends for both were shortened in 2020 for G&S and 2021 for RGB; the Trailblazer formula struggles with this, hence the yr on yr comparisons are n/a
