LEAGUE TABLES PROFIT PER HEAD Profit per head
There’s no ambiguity about this table, though. Excluding the top and bottom five as usual, the indicated average operating profit per head of staff in the current year is £18,413. Three years ago in 2020, before the pandemic turned the world upside down, the comparable figure was £8,923 – less than half as much. It would be hard to find a better illustration of the current buoyancy in the merchant market.
Return on capital
Three years ago, the 2020 edition of Trailblazers indicated average return on capital in the merchant industry of 16.2%. Given the general economic conditions prevailing at the time, that was a pretty impressive figure, although we did note at the time that the average appeared to be declining modestly. But what a difference three years makes: applying the same process of excluding the top and bottom five in the table to eliminate the outliers, 2020’s return on capital of 16.2% has shot up in 2023 to 25.6%. Did we mention that now seems to be a very good time to be a builders merchant?
