hen you think of commercial cleaning, you don’t immediately picture a family business. But the


trend that Minster Cleaning are seeing in their franchises dispels that myth. Minster Cleaning was started in 1982 by current Chairman, Alan Haigh, and his wife Glynis. In 1992, Alan franchised Minster Cleaning, and the network grew from there. Today, Alan’s sons are company directors. More than 40 years on, nearly half of Minster Cleaning’s branches have family members working together. Families come in many shapes


and sizes and the same is true of the families working together at Minster Cleaning. Some franchisees have brought their children into their businesses, some bought businesses with their spouses or siblings, and some work with their parents. In June 2024, Edward and


Charles Lofthouse bought Minster Cleaning Sheffield from their dad, James, in a first for the network. James then bought the Derbyshire branch of Minster

Cleaning as a resale which he runs with another of his sons, Henry, meaning that there is now some healthy competition between these branches! Having worked together in


the branch before they bought the business, Ed and Charlie know what works for them. Ed says: “Charlie and I play to our respective strengths based on what the business needs. Charlie deals with quoting, HR and customer care, while I work on finance, business growth and new opportunities. If a task doesn’t fall under either of our core strengths, we take it on together.” Minster Cleaning also has many


couples working alongside each other day to day. Andy Gregory and Jenny Ireton bought Minster Cleaning Essex in February 2025. Jenny says: “We have found our


first year working together to be both rewarding and productive. It has allowed us to build the business with a strong level of trust and understanding which has been invaluable.” Andy concurs: “We value the trust and open communication which makes day-to-day operations more efficient and


enjoyable. Our favourite part of working together is the ability to make decisions quickly and with confidence.” They both agree that, although it has taken time, their work-life balance is improving as they go from strength to strength. Dan Williams, Managing


Director of Minster Cleaning says: “We are very fortunate that many of our franchisees take such pride in their business that they feel confident in bringing family members into the network. For me, this proves their trust in our brand and our business model.” Initial start-up cost for a new


territory is £20,000 + VAT which covers licence, training, computer hardware, stationery and a marketing launch package. In addition, a minimum of £35,000 working capital plus personal drawings is required. Finance support is available from leading banks subject to status. Minster Cleaning have a resale


opportunity available in Glasgow. The resale fee is £10,000 plus VAT in addition to the purchase price of the business. 
