FRANCHISEFOCUS INVESTMENT: FROM £100,000 Top of their game Wiltshire Farm Foods’ franchise partners tell of their success D

artford-based Pritesh and Kalpana Amlani came to franchising from backgrounds

in chartered accountancy and banking, respectively. Seven years ago, while raising their family, the husband-and-wife duo decided to start working together and invested in the Wiltshire Farm Foods franchise in their local area. Pritesh takes up the story…

How have you grown the business? When we took over the franchise, trading was steady, but I felt there was potential for more, so I set about getting the basics right. For us, that was more regular team meetings, sharing with them our business vision and goals, and putting in place more systems and controls to meet our KPIs and forecasts. With my previous experience of running businesses, I felt we hit the ground running, but a lot of hard work was required to get the business to where it belonged. We still have a lot of growth opportunities and, together with the franchisor who also has big ambitions, we are excited about the future!

"We should have done this sooner! The business has given us a better work-life balance and more time together as a family"

In what ways has life improved since you changed careers and became franchise partners? When we came across Wiltshire Farm Foods, we loved the whole company ethos, particularly its ‘service-first’ concept. Life as a franchisee in a company like Wiltshire Farm Foods is very rewarding, as not only do you own your own business and are your own boss, but you also

make a genuine difference to your local community. We strive to provide the best service to an elderly customer base, many of whom rely on us. Since acquiring the business, our work-

life balance has improved. We would never have thought of working together as husband and wife but we both feel we should have done this sooner! It’s definitely given us a better balance and more time together as a family.

Describe a typical day running your Wiltshire Farm Foods franchise... There is no such thing as a typical day! I will say, though, that owning a Wiltshire Farm Foods franchise involves, on a daily basis, all or most of the aspects of running a business. This can involve: making sure daily KPIs are met; ensuring all orders and deliveries for the next day are picked and ready by end of play for smooth delivery; making sure stock levels are sufficient and that everyone in the business is on top of what is required; keeping the team motivated; and reviewing our marketing activities. One ethos I have is that we must never get complacent and take any part of the business for granted, be it staff,

customers or suppliers. Each day has its own different rewards and challenges, and this is what makes it fun.

Are there any standout moments or highlights so far that you’d like to share? Ÿ Winning the regional franchisee award two years after we took over

Ÿ Achieving year-on-year growth targets Ÿ Getting our own modern cold store and office premises

Ÿ Establishing a good, loyal, hard- working team who are genuinely interested in making a difference to the customers and the community we serve

Ÿ Treasuring so many real stories of the differences we, as a local business and team, have made to individuals in the community. 
