Women in franchising
Wiltshire Farm Foods
For over 25 years, Wiltshire Farm Foods has been delivering delicious and nutritious frozen ready meals directly to the home. Operating in the UK’s fastest-growing demographic sector, Wiltshire Farm Foods offers massive growth potential. More than a guaranteed business model, however, it’s also a thriving social enterprise and a way of giving back. Suzie Leeson, WFF Loughborough,
and Tracey Harris, WFF Newbury, had different journeys to becoming franchise partners, but their reasons for joining were very similar – determination for growth and a passion for great service and giving back to the community.
What did you do before and what prompted you to make the change? Suzie: “I was juggling two jobs, working in occupational therapy and growing my personal training business. I felt I was working all hours, balancing work and family, and was ready for a change. I wanted something fulfilling while giving a work-life balance. I realised franchising could provide this.
“I looked at many opportunities, none
of which attracted me like Wiltshire Farm Foods. I loved its whole ethos; making a difference to peoples’ lives was the thing that drew me to the business.” Tracey: “I joined Wiltshire Farm Foods 12 years before becoming a Franchise Partner, working my way up to business manager. When the previous owner retired I was already running the business, and was in the right financial position, so it seemed a natural move. “I knew the business and was already
invested in its success. I loved what I did and believed in the company ethos. It’s a fantastic business model and I could see the growth potential.”
What qualities do you need to be a successful franchisee? Suzie: “Dedication and drive, plus a passion for excellent customer service – this is an absolute must; as is the need to be reliable and trustworthy as we work with vulnerable people who rely on us.” Tracey: “It’s important to be hands on, getting involved in all aspects of the business. Franchisees need to enjoy

working in the team, as well as managing it. Displaying determination and a positive mindset is also key to success.”
How was trading in the beginning and how is business today? Suzie: “We set up from scratch – brand new unit, freezer, vans and staff – so it was very challenging. We’ve been operating for 16 months and are still learning. As a team starting together has bonded us and we have built strong relationships with customers. I would do it all again in a flash; it's the best decision I have ever made.” Tracey: “Before taking over the franchise, we were in the bottom quartile for everything. Trading was steady but the growth was stagnant. Five years on, we’re top for growth and are in the top quartile. With a great team who are focused and committed to providing an excellent service, I couldn’t have hoped for more.”
