Introducing… P
ulse Health, Fitness & Wellbeing started trading in November 2012 delivering chair-based exercise and rehabilitation sessions within the care sector.
The journey started at Cedars Care Home in Leeds. During a three-month period, founders Chris Chapman and Tom Kittrick started developing their new product and scaled up the business within the Yorkshire area. The development of the initial product was assisted by local GPs and representatives from the Care Quality Commission. As the company grew, further products were launched, such as one-to-one sessions, group sessions within the community and, most importantly, personalised sessions tailored to end-of-life homes, hospices and residents suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s. Alongside the chair-based exercise and
rehabilitation sessions, within a 12-month period Pulse Health, Fitness & Wellbeing started to deliver schools sports provision. The school market is a crowded one; therefore, lots of dedicated time and expertise went into studying, planning and developing, making sure the product was truly unique. It’s designed to develop fundamental movement patterns and aligned regular testing and analysing days.
…Pulse Health, Fitness & Wellbeing, a growing franchise that provides fitness for all ages and abilities
At the end of year three, Chris and Tom knew the Pulse Health, Fitness & Wellbeing model could become a franchise. With this in mind, they had to make it a proven model in more areas. Corbyn Kilday, an old Pulse Health, Fitness & Wellbeing instructor, returned from playing rugby in Australia. The plan was to trial the franchise model with Corbyn and the aim was to test the product in the Manchester area with the support of Tom and Chris. Within 12 months, Pulse Health, Fitness & Wellbeing Manchester was delivering 126 hours per calendar month in Oldham, Rochdale and Stockport. Halfway through this period, with the success of the product in Manchester, Chris and Tom felt the product needed to be trialled again in a different area with someone who had never worked for the business.
Michael Hodgson joined the company with the sole purpose of setting up in Darlington and the surrounding area. Seven months later, Pulse Health, Fitness & Wellbeing was delivering 72 hours per calendar month. With this proven success in three separate areas it was clear that the product was strong enough to become a franchise. Both Manchester and Darlington models have now been purchased.

Pulse’s growth over the last four and a half years has highlighted many gaps in the market, allowing the company to provide new services to existing clients, as well as development through the acquisition of new clients.
Supporting this growth are such factors as an ageing population and cuts to council budgets, leading to more and more elderly people having to rely on the support of private care and residential homes. In addition, the new legislation around the sugar tax has meant an estimated £520million a year will be spent on increasing the funding for sport in primary schools. This investment was taken after research carried out by University College London showed that half of seven-year- olds do not do enough exercise. Pulse Health, Fitness & Wellbeing believes the best time to invest in its franchise model is now. There is still massive potential in several sectors within existing regions, as well as in the new unrepresented regions.
