Mac Tools Stuart Hanley
Stuart, who lives in Dumfries, launched his Mac Tools franchise in January 2010 and covers 110 miles across Scotland
What did you do prior to investing in Mac Tools? I had previously been working in a number of different factories as a process operator. It was a good job but I was made redundant in 2009. I tried working at a waste energy plant and a local hotel for a while after that, but it didn’t really work out for me. I wanted something for myself.
Why did you choose Mac Tools? My brother-in-law was actually involved in Mac Tools at the time, and I spent a lot of time talking to him about what he was doing. I could see it really worked for him, and it looked like such a good opportunity – the fresh start I needed. Mac Tools hadn’t been in Dumfries, so I liked the challenge of trying to establish Mac Tools in my local area, and put the brand on the map.
How did you find the initial training? At the time, I was in one of the last groups to receive training at the Mac Tools School in Ohio, which consisted of a 10-day intensive course, with homework each night to get an understanding of the brand
and how the franchise would work. Before that, I also spent a week in Sheffield and went back there after returning from Ohio to plan the launch of my business. The training was really good, and was all to do with the practicals of running the Mac Tools business, so I really felt I had a good grasp of what I needed to do.
How have you found the ongoing support and training? I have an area manager, who I have a good working relationship with. I normally speak to him every week. He’s been a big help over the last year, not hesitant in offering support when I need it or if I have any queries. He helps to get things sorted and always finds an answer for me.
How has business been so far? It’s been good, and winning the Mac Tools Diamond Award was a great moment for me. I’ve learned the secret of my business success is based on my own determination. I’m dedicated to the products I’m selling and feel confident with them.
I like to be involved when I’m with the people I’m selling to, to actually demonstrate the products, which they like because they can see for themselves how they work. They know I am reliable, my tools are reliable and Mac Tools is reliable.
Have you faced any challenges? Sometimes, being out on the road all the time can be a lonely job, but there is always somebody on the end of the phone who you can chat to, like the area manager or other people in the Mac Tools network. Being part of the same franchise, they understand what life on the road is like, so in that sense, you’re not alone. Plus, you’re meeting up with regular customers who you can have a chat with – they become more than just a customer in that respect.
What are your plans for the future with the franchise? My immediate plans are to continue to grow my business. I know I will soon be in a position where I can really enjoy some exciting family plans. This was one of the attractions of the Mac Tools franchise when I first considered the opportunity.
Do you have any advice for potential Mac Tools franchisees? When you go out, don’t get disheartened if you’re having a quiet day. Sometimes, customers just want to have a look without buying anything. But come the end of the week or the end of the month, it all balances out.
