A colourful
challenge requiring multiple laser wavelengths
2022, the European Chemicals Agency banned thousands of chemicals used in ink for colour tattoos in response to concerns over allergic reactions and a possible cancer link. This has brought colourful tattoos into the spotlight as people reevaluate the risks. However, erasing full colour tattoos is a much more complicated procedure than removing “traditional” black ink tattoos. Laser wavelengths are a key factor. By delivering short duration, high-power pulses of light energy, lasers in tattoo removal devices break ink particles in the skin. Different colours absorb and reflect light differently, so if the ink doesn’t absorb the light sufficiently, it won’t fragment. This all depends on the wavelength of the laser beam. Therefore, multi- wavelength systems are required to enable aesthetic and medical practitioners to treat color inks tattoos. These powerful and versatile machines incorporate photonics technologies to achieve effective and safe color tattoo removal.

One of the most important photonic components for success in laser tattoo removal is the Pockels cell – like those made by photonics company G&H – particularly in relation to wavelength. Pockels cells effectively act as a Q-switch to modulate the laser beam. Meanwhile, the choice of crystal optics used in the device determines the all-important wavelength. A bigger VCM with even more force
Geeplus’ new coil can achieve more force than its predecessor.
In response to customers requiring even higher force, Geeplus have developed a bigger voice coil motor. The new VM75P2, like its predecessors, uses a highly optimised magnet assembly to produce exceptional force/mass ratio for high acceleration in dynamic applications, the new VM75P2 is one of a new generation of voice coil motors from Geeplus capable of providing a significant increase in performance. The two-pole device develops higher force and acceleration with shorter displacement. The Geeplus designed and manufactured coil can be modified to provide an even longer stroke and higher force if required.
Ideally suited to highly dynamic applications where a load mass is required to accelerate very quickly, such as vibration, optical shutter operation or pick and place mechanisms, the VM75P2 provides greater force from a given coil assembly than that developed in a pot or traditional ‘sandwich’ construction, with the same excitation power. This means that with an unchanged coil mass, a 30–50% higher acceleration can be achieved.
