Different name, same reliable quality
Alleima, previously Sandvik Materials Technology, has a new name, but its reputation for excellent products and customer service has not changed. Jerry Blanton, global sales and marketing manager at Alleima’s business unit for medical, explains the reason behind the name change, as well as what it means for customers.
Sandvik Materials Technology is now Alleima, a company fully separated from Sandvik and listed on the Stockholm Nasdaq exchange. What prompted this? Jerry Blanton: The board of Sandvik believed that both Sandvik and Sandvik Materials Technology (SMT), now Alleima, could develop more favourably on their own, improving long-term value for shareholders. Both Sandvik and Alleima are well-positioned within their own areas. As a standalone listed company, Alleima will be able to further strengthen its position as a world-leading manufacturer of advanced stainless steels and special alloys for the most demanding industries. Building on its extensive capabilities and strong market position formed under SMT, Alleima will continue to grow its business by leveraging major global trends, such as the high demand for renewable and efficient energy, as well as the need for new medical technology.
It was important that the name should be very different from the name Sandvik since they are now two separate companies. We also wanted it to be different from our competitors’ names. The name Alleima is a combination of the company’s core strengths, alloy and material, with alei, an old French version of the word alloy, in the centre. The name was narrowed down from a list of more than 300 options. At first, we thought it was quite different for the industry we’re operating in, but it has really grown on us and now we like it and feel it really resembles what we do.
What will the change mean for customers – and what will stay the same?

customers. Our development and manufacturing of advanced stainless steels and special alloys is world-leading. It’s what we’ve been doing for over 160 years, and it’s still our reason to exist. It will not affect our business relationships or our offering, but we will conduct business under the new Alleima name. A legal agreement is an agreement between legal entities and not between brands. An agreement signed by a legal entity within Sandvik Materials Technology is still valid, even if the name of the legal entity has changed, as long as the company registration number is the same. The name change has no impact on our capabilities, global offering or presence. We will keep control over our supply chain, from R&D to melt to the final product. Sandviken in Sweden will remain the main industrial site and location for R&D. The head office is also located in Sandviken, Sweden.
Our employees at worldwide locations and our global sales team will continue to be there for our customers.
