PH SCOTTISHARMACY AWARDS

PHARMACIST OF THE YEAR

Celebrating Leadership, Innovation and Impact

The Pharmacist of the Year award recognises pharmacists who demonstrate outstanding leadership, innovation and sustained impact within practice.

Open to contractor and employee pharmacists working across independent and group settings, the award highlights individuals whose work enhances patient care, advances clinical services and strengthens the role of pharmacy within the wider healthcare system.

Judges look for clear evidence of initiative, professional excellence and meaningful outcomes. Successful nominees often lead service development in response to local health needs, introduce innovative approaches to consultation or prescribing and play a central role in preventative care and health education. Leadership and influence are key themes, with recognition given to pharmacists who act as mentors, advocates and trusted clinical figures in their communities.

Many nominees are recognised for building relationships across primary care, working closely with GP practices and healthcare professionals to improve patient pathways and deliver integrated care. The award places strong emphasis on measurable impact. It

celebrates those who improve access to care, support collaborative working and demonstrate how pharmacy expertise can ease pressure on other parts of the health service while improving patient confidence and outcomes.

Innovation may take many forms, from developing new clinical services to expanding prescribing roles or introducing community initiatives that address local health challenges and support preventative care.

Last year’s winner, Debbie Smith of Davidson’s Chemist in Portsoy, exemplified the purpose of the award. An Independent Prescriber, Debbie has made a lasting difference to her rural and often isolated community through compassionate leadership and

clinical innovation. She strengthened access to care during periods of disruption, supported closer working between pharmacy and local GP services and developed services including ear health and prescribing support. Debbie also mentored colleagues, supported trainee development and served as a Designated Prescribing Practitioner and Educational Supervisor.

In recognising Debbie, the judges celebrated not a single achievement but a sustained commitment to improving healthcare and inspiring the profession across Scottish Pharmacy. Her work also highlighted the growing role of community pharmacists as clinical leaders who drive service development while maintaining the personal connection with patients at the heart of pharmacy practice.
