Andrew Melvin is recognised for leading a system-wide menopause safety improvement initiative that has strengthened prescribing governance across NHS Ayrshire and Arran. In response to rising menopausal hormone therapy demand and identified risks of unopposed oestrogen prescribing, Andrew established a multidisciplinary working group to deliver education, EMIS system enhancements and patient safety resources. Repeat audits demonstrated a measurable reduction in prescribing risk, while community pharmacy was embedded as an additional safety checkpoint. Through structured governance, clinician training and patient empowerment tools, Andrew has delivered sustainable improvements in menopause care and reduced the risk of avoidable harm.
ANDREW MELVIN NHS AYRSHIRE AND ARRAN
Campbeltown Pharmacy has transformed access to prescribing services within a rural community by embedding daily Independent Prescriber-led clinics. Managing around 60 Pharmacy First Plus consultations per month, the team assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of acute conditions, actively relieving pressure on local GP services. A structured, face-to-face weight management clinic now supports nearly 150 registered patients, improving safety and long-term outcomes. By combining robust clinical governance, protected clinic time and strong collaboration with primary care, the team has reduced healthcare inequality and established the pharmacy as a trusted local healthcare hub.
