Vol. 64, No. 2 Summer 2019 188

scratch building very elaborate models (which were all very impressive to a newcomer like me). I gleaned quite a few useful pointers from these articles, but it occurred to me that making a few changes or modifi cations could make your journal more helpful to less experienced builders:

1.

Include more articles on building and detailing wooden kits. T e only article I saw in recent issues was about upgrading a plastic steel warship kit. T e result was spectacular, but I am not sure how much use I could make of the author’s methods when I build a kit of a wooden sailing ship.

2. It would be really helpful to include more short articles on quite basic things. For example, what are the advantages and disadvantages of various types of glues? What are the best ways to seal wood surfaces before painting, and which paints work best? Where can I source the various small tools that I keep thinking would be very useful as I build? Most kit instructions do not give much guidance at all about these things.

3. Include more reviews of the various wooden ship kits on the market, both as in-box

and builds. Also include reviews of useful (preferably relatively inexpensive) hand tools for model builders.

I hope you do not think I am against the inclusion of articles about the high end of ship modeling. I just think there is an opportunity for the Journal to provide information that is not available elsewhere for the less experienced builder.

T ank you for considering these ideas.
