blocks hooked into eyebolts around the foot of the mast or belayed around cleats in the uniquely French fi tting on deck. It looked confusing and dauntingly complex, but the rigging process proceeded steadily and logically, running each line one by one without fouling them on their neighbors. (Figure 16)

the pulley lines running through the scuttle to the fi tting on the deck below. Other large lines tied off to the sturdy bitts. Smaller ones rove through tackle
Making billowing sails started similarly with ironed batik fabric pinned to a corkboard. T e shape and size of each was taken from the sail plan, checked against the model, and laid out on the cloth. T e panel lines and tabling were marked out, then the perimeter was painted with white glue. When the glue was dry the sail was cut out as before. For these sails I cut small slits along what would become the perimeter of the sail aſt er the tabling was folded for the cringles, small raised areas of the bolt rope for attaching the sail control lines. (Figure 17 and insert) As the bolt rope was worked around the perimeter of the sail I reached in through those slits with a needle to pull the line out into small humps. T e tabling was folded over and ironed down to lock them in place. (Figure 18 and insert)
