that also contained the Asdic (Sonar) equipment. Two light machine guns were mounted at the sides, plus two signalling lamps and assorted equipment lockers. T e bridge was manned at action stations by gunners, signalmen, lookouts, the offi cer of the watch, Asdic ratings, and the captain. Wartime demands soon forced these ships into the deep ocean escort role where the ineffi ciencies of this design soon became apparent, so when ships went for their fi rst big refi ts, the bridge was expanded.
In 1943 Chicoutimi received extended bridge wings with 20-millimeter anti-aircraſt weapons and the Type 271 radar. Shortages of time, shipyard space, and materials meant the ship was not fully modernized by extending the fo’c’s’le and installing the low power system necessary to operate gyro compasses and
the latest anti-submarine detection and weapons systems. Chicoutimi therefore retained the original compass house and now obsolete Asdic equipment but did, however, receive a second magnetic compass on an extended front, making it easier to maneuver the ship in action.
I began my model bridge by constructing the 20-millimeter anti-aircraſt
gun tubs, using
commercial resin castings that I wrapped with 0.020- inch styrene. T ese were stepped to allow the gunner to elevate the weapon. I trimmed them so they could be set at the extreme edges of the bridge per my Chicoutimi photographs.
Next I built the railings using the same method as previously. (Figure 109) Like the others, they were painted off the ship once everything was aligned and glued. T ey originally encircled the entire bridge, but in 1943 the forward portion was extended and
