Modeling References
An article by J.R. McCleary, published in Nautical Research Journal 45:3 (September 2000), included the only known photograph of USS Saginaw as well as another of the gig. T is same article contained reproductions of National Archives drawings (#40- 7-7D & E), which show deck plans, hull lines, body plan and copies of the building instructions, including dimensions of the masts and spars. When combined with a sail plan (NA #40-7-7F) published
in Donald Canney’s Old Steam Navy, Volume I, I had suffi cient information to build a miniature model of this vessel. Using all these sources I prepared my own conjectural drawing showing the appearance of this ship. (Figure 5) Since no pilot house was apparent in the lone Saginaw photograph, I decided to omit one from my model. T ere is data indicating that a pilot house may have been added later.
Building the model—hull construction
