Vol. 64, No. 2 Summer 2019 108
8. Drawing instruments and drawing of Frame 4 showing marks for top of planks on the right along with card stock pattern cut from a tracing.
Start on the lower line. Measure in 2½ inches from the leſt end and, using a right triangle, erect a perpendicular extending up to the half breadth centerline. Label this line “S” or “Stern”. Using the architect’s scale rule and the scale marked 1 or 1 foot = 1 inch, measure to the right 4 feet 1 inch. Here erect another vertical line and label it “X”. Measure another 2 feet to scale to the right and erect another vertical and label it “1”. Continue erecting eight more verticals every 2 feet to scale, labeling them sequentially “2” through “9”. Measure 2 feet 9 inches to the right and erect another vertical and label it “Y”. Measure 7 feet 1 inch to the right and erect a fi nal vertical and label it “B” or “Bow”. T is is the forward end of the hull or bow perpendicular. All vertical lines between the bow and stern are the
location of section planes cutting the hull vertically. Section or Station 5 is the midship and widest hull section.
Now use the table of off sets (Figure 5) to mark all elevations above the base on all the vertices. T e table of off sets is nothing more than a matrix of stations and elevations above the base line at each station. Note that these elevations are measured to the top inside edge of each plank. T ese are not waterlines but profi le views of each plank. Note that the fi rst line is the outside edge of the bottom which, naturally, would be identical with the inside bottom edge of the fi rst strake (STR) or plank.
