Duty Free Americas is ‘bullish’ in Brazil where it continues to invest
Duty Free Americas President, Leon Falic, spoke to Andrew Pentol recently ahead of the company’s first Brazilian border store opening in Uruguaiana on the border with Argentina and Uruguay whilst giving his appraisal of the business over the last 18 months.
ast year was another successful one for Duty Free Americas (DFA), which reported sales
of around $1.65bn, driven by buoyant economies in the Americas; including the US. Overall, DFA has registered solid
performances in recent years, growing duty free and travel retail sales by roughly 8% to $1.53bn in 2017, up from just over $1.4bn in 2016. This was thanks to key contract gains in Panama (Tocumen Airport), El Salvador and Haifa. In 2016, the company also excelled, winning contracts at three Brazilian
airports (building on its very first win at Afonso Pena International Airport in Curitiba in 2014), which are currently handled by the DFA office in Rio where its regional buyers have taken up residence. Building on its existing footprint
in the region, DFA is now preparing to open its first Brazilian border store this month in Uruguaiana, the second largest city on the Brazilian border with Argentina and Uruguay. The store is located across the
street from the 850sq m Dufry outlet which opened in August. A month prior to the Dufry opening,
the inaugural Brazilian border stores were unveiled in Barra do Quarai and Yaguarao.
‘Tough to differentiate’ DFA President, Leon Falic, told TRBusiness that the company’s first Brazilian border store will be relatively similar to the Dufry outlet. “In our business it’s tough to differentiate. Everybody carries the same products and the rule of thumb is that there is always demand for a certain product locally. This is the product we end up selling the most of.”
