transportation hub for the Beijing- Tianjin-Hebei region that supports the construction of the Xiong’an New District.” Chen continued by paying

gratitude to supportive domestic and foreign brands ‘who have been paying attention to the development of China’s tax free industry’. The new airport is expected to

handle 45m passengers in 2021 and 72m by 2025. CDFG’s Daxing business helps it to further entrench its position in China’s burgeoning duty free and tax free market.

Is China opening up? As mentioned, CDFG now boasts airport duty free contracts at Beijing Capital International Terminals 2 and 3; Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao (CDFG/Sunrise Duty Free); Guangzhou Baiyun Terminals 1 and 2; Macau; and Hong Kong International Airport (CDF-Lagardère) among others. TRBusiness was given some

additional insight on the Chinese airport duty free business in an interview with former, Deputy General Manager for Hangzhou International Airport, David Jea (see full interview on page 81). Keen to learn whether it is likely

that the Chinese Government will ever permit foreign companies to bid for duty free contracts in China, Jea revealed that it had been considered. “They’ve been talking about it for

the last three or four years,” said Jea. “There is reason to believe that changes are coming.” This would go some way to

explaining CDFG’s acquisition drive in China – most recently of Sunrise Duty Free in 2017 – providing them with a huge advantage over any foreign competition should the market open up. At the moment, numerous

operators who might be interested in this sort of opportunity have expressed their doubts that this will ever happen, in exchanges with TRBusiness. However, Jea told this publication that increasing CDFG’s competition would not be such a bad thing. “We are in favour of promoting

healthy competition…In Korea, for example, I hear that Incheon Airport encourages foreign companies to bid and I believe that can only be a good thing.” Of course, CDFG is not only

of Liaoning Province, Dalian remains an important coastal hub for tourism and trade. The upgrade of the store extends

the current duty free footprint at the port, ‘easing the comfort and convenience for overseas tourists visiting Dalian’, said CDFG.
