The market on Saint-Tropez’s Place des Lices is a real treat Browsing in Saint-Tropez

My husband and I love France and whenever one of our trips there includes the Riviera, I try to get to Saint-Tropez. Not for all the glitzy restaurants and beaches, but for the market which is every Tuesday and Saturday from 8am to 1pm on the Place des Lices. I’m there as they open at 8am when it’s still quiet and the aisles are not crowded. Since my husband and I stay in a nearby hotel, I’m not there to purchase food, though the wonderful smells of the roasting chickens and the huge pans of paella are enticing, and the beauty of the fruits, vegetables and cheeses are certainly worthy of a photograph. I’m there to shop… for table linens, casual dresses, costume jewellery, unique straw bags, handmade fabric bags for cosmetics or money, and for whatever is the newest fi nd that season. We’ve enjoyed many a market in France, but to us nothing compares to a visit to the market in Saint-Tropez. Joan Murphy Irvine, California

LEAVING BELVÈS The two of us stayed a couple of nights at the beautiful village of Belvès in Périgord Noir. It was too warm to go sightseeing, so we opted for a train trip to Agen and back. A train came in with no indication of its destination and we got on it. Luckily, we managed to alight from it before it moved off, having established that it was not heading to Agen! The train we required arrived a few minutes later. Gordon Verity Andover, UK

Les Fantômes, a sculpture by Paul Landowski MOVING MEMORIAL

For many years, my husband and I left the A26 at Saint-Quentin and headed south on our journey to Provence cross-country. Each time we passed a sign near Oulchy- le-Château for ‘Les Fantômes’, we promised ourselves that we would stop and explore one day. Finally, and sadly, myself and my sister did stop and were amazed and awestruck when in the middle of open countryside we found this very moving war memorial looking towards Chateau Thierry. It is well worth the deviation from the motorway! Julia Mook By email
