FOOD & DRINK ❘ BON APPÉTIT A family affair
WATER DIVINE In high-end eateries around France, there is a growing trend for wine sommeliers to expand their repertoire to include water ordering advice. Among them is Aurélien Farouil at Les Sources de Caudalie near Bordeaux. Alongside great wines, 20 mineral water references are offered on the menu. “The bottles are kept at the same temperature as the wines. Some will have more mineral notes and others will be more neutral,” he told francetvinfo.
TIK TOK TRIUMPH
Rouen father and son team find success on social media
Proof that social media really does influence people’s culinary
businesses and careers comes from Rouen. Thirty-year-old chef Mathis Molinié, who works alongside his father at restaurant Philippe, posts
shorts on video platform TikTok to showcase “the merit and glory of
our work”. He now has a following of over 250,000, and has seen a
threefold increase in diners. “Young people tell their parents, ‘ah, I saw it on TikTok, we’ve got to go there’,” Mathis proudly told France Bleu.
THE BEAN QUEEN
After two years of hard work, committed coffee roaster Anne Caron has been awarded the
prestigious title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France, an industry benchmark award renowned for its exacting standards. In 2017, Caron won the title
Meilleure Torréfactrice de France (France’s best coffee roaster). The exam consists of fi ve technical tests, plus a professional situational test and the presentation of a work of art. At the family café, Café Caron, in
Saclay, just outside Paris (founded in 1974 by her father), she uses a 50s-era roasting machine and a slow-cooking method. Brava, Anne!
French actress Sophie Marceau became surprise ambassador for Périgord
walnuts while on holiday in the region. In a passionate video on Instagram, she said: “A short message to help our local growers. When you buy nuts, buy French!”
PINK PLAIT RECORD-BREAKING
Garlic lovers in Lautrec in the Tarn took their amour for the pungent allium to the next level, breaking the world record for the longest plait (called a manouille in French) at the annual Fête de
l’Ail Rose. The village’s pink garlic – known for being especially aromatic – boasts both Label rouge and Indication Géographique Protégée status. The new record for conjoined bulbs and stalks now stands at an epic 24m30, with the winning plait carried aloft through the village by proud locals.
