BOURGES
Designed by the mathematician canon Jean Fusoris, France’s oldest astronomical clock, in Saint-Étienne cathedral, was built
in 1424. The upper dial dates from the late 19th century and indicates hours and minutes while the lower one shows lunar cycles, the height of the sun and zodiac signs.

The clock in Notre-Dame cathedral is a Renaissance
masterpiece, though its current mechanism dates from 1842.
The main attraction is its animated figures which come out to play at 12.30pm sharp every day.
www.cathedrale-strasbourg.fr Dating from the 15th century,
Auxerre’s clock tower houses the clock from 1483, featuring two hands: a solar hand (a 24-hour cycle) and a lunar hand; the two
juxtapose at midday at new moon and at midnight during a full moon.
