Secret Lagoon FLÚDIR, ICELAND
Secret Lagoon is a spectacular outdoor swimming pool filled with glorious warm water from ancient hot springs, such as Vadmálahver, Básahver and Litli Geysir. Natural geothermal heating leaves the water at an average temperature of 38C to 40C all year round, with the bottom and edges of the pool covered with natural material and stones from the surrounding fields and hills. What sets Secret Lagoon apart from other
pools is its unique history and scenery. The pool is surrounded by several hot springs, mossy fields and a small geyser that erupts approximately every five minutes. Drinking in the view while bathing or walking along the path around the pool is a joy in itself. The steam rising from the hot springs creates a magical atmosphere and ensures that Secret Lagoon never looks the same moment to moment. Secret Lagoon is located at Hvammsvegur
in the small village of Flúdir, only 64 miles from Reykjavik’s city centre, with visitors often choosing to start or end their tour
along the Golden Circle in the Secret Lagoon. Bathing in the warm waters of Flúdir has
been part of local tradition for centuries, along with gardening , mainly in greenhouses, all thanks to the local hot springs. The pool was established in 1891 and is
officially the oldest pool in Iceland. Icelanders call it Gamla Laugin, which simply means ‘old pool’. Indeed, the first swimming lessons in Iceland were held here in 1909. After 1947, swimming lessons were transferred to other swimming pools around the country, and so Gamla Laugin fell into 60 years of disrepair. In 2005, the idea of giving the place
a second life was hatched, and after nine years of extensive renovation, the new opening was celebrated on 7 June 2014. The idea was to create a destination that would be more convenient for visitors in terms of infrastructure (renovation of the nearby road and parking lot) and facilities (modern indoor showers with lockers, reception and bistro cafe), while maintaining the pool’s original glory.
Don’t miss A walk on the path around the Secret Lagoon to discover the ancient hot springs of Vadmálahver, Básahver and Litli Geysir
