healing through releasing blocked energy. I’m here to try reiki for the first time, and as
I head underground to the spa, I feel instantly calmer and far away from the bustle of the busy streets above.

room, past the tranquil 18m indoor pool, and then as I wait for my treatment to begin, I sip on a lovely jasmine green tea.
I’m led to the change
Bernice Robinson oversees the practice here at Akasha. As my therapist, Lauren, talks me through the treatment, I learn about the seven different chakras in the body and how energy flows through us. It turns out that daily stresses or problems can lead to blockages and energy flow disruptions in the body, causing illness. The aim of reiki is to release those blockages, which I’m told, can be quite emotional. I’m a little sceptical, but mostly curious and keen to get started. After the room is spritzed with cleansing
rose water, Lauren asks me to take some deep breaths and then begins with a light upper-body massage. I feel several light crystals being placed at different points along my spine, and then the

healing part of reiki begins — the use of hands held over the skin.
I’ve been told that many
people feel heat on the body as energy shifts, and I feel a sensation of increased temperature over me under the slow movement of Lauren’s hands. The room is dimly lit, and the low music soothes me almost to sleep. My legs twitch and tingle throughout — I learn later that this is released energy leaving my body. The hour goes by quickly, and afterwards we
chat about my chakra health, including some intensity Lauren felt from my heart chakra. After the treatment, I feel lighter and more relaxed than I’ve felt in a long time, with my mind pleasantly clear. I want to hold onto this sense of calm for as long as possible as I step back out into reality.
