Smash your New Year fitness goals
Every New Year, good intentions are set without an achievable goal or even a structured plan, so more often than not they fall by the wayside
A
t this time of year, how many times have we heard ourselves, family, friends or colleagues saying, “I’m going to get fit.
I’m going to eat more healthily. I’m going to join the gym”? Yet within just a couple of weeks those good intentions will have probably been forgotten and we’ll all be back to our usual — unhealthy — routines. Could this be because we’re simply asking
too much of ourselves? Expecting over- night changes to long-standing routines,
behaviours and habits,
often with unrealistic expectations, is a recipe for failure. Fitness plans, such as the ‘Couch
to 5K’ running plan from the NHS, have helped many beginners get off the couch and start running by setting

an achievable goal and
providing a structured nine-week plan of physical activity. While being physically active is important, it’s only one aspect of a healthier lifestyle.
Integrated training Integrated
training programmes aren’t
anything new; sports coaches have relied upon them for decades because they weave together related content from multiple sources. These programmes combine physical activity, strength and conditioning, recovery, yoga, nutrition, healthy eating, positive mindset, meditation and more to provide the immersive education required to learn routines, behaviours and habits for ongoing success, long after the initial goal has been achieved. With the advent of ‘push'
mobile apps like Get Event Fit (geteventfit-app. com), the delivery of such integrated training programmes has now become available to everybody to help give daily guidance, education and motivation throughout the training journey.
Virtual challenges with integrated training A virtual running challenge, with an integrated training programme and a finisher medal, provides all the ingredients a beginner needs to satisfy the prerequisites of a successful New Year fitness resolution — an achievable goal, a struc- tured plan and an achievement reward. Uniquely, a virtual challenge can be completed at any location — you can run outside or on a treadmill, individually or with friends; you can even walk, providing you complete the distance. These can really benefit beginners who often find attending large, organised running events intimidating, since participants complete the final run
within their comfort zone. Virtuathon has recently launched a series of innovative 5K, 10K and half- marathon virtual running challenges for
beginners, to help kick-start a fitter, healthier and happier 2018. Virtuathon’s integrated training programmes,
delivered daily via the Get Event Fit app, ensure beginners are guided, inspired, educated and motivated every day throughout their training journey to fully prepare them for their virtual challenge. Participants can choose to use their challenge to fundraise for their favourite charity if they want and they’re rewarded with a Virtuathon finisher medal for their incredible achievement. Virtuathon has also created other exciting challenges for schools and company
virtual
employees, designed specifically to inspire a more active, healthier and motivated workforce. Learn more by visiting
