32 New Year New You • Charity Challenges

Push yourself and take on poverty

oping countries, enabling poor communities to build on their skills and knowledge to produce sustainable and practical solutions. In the past year, the amazing support shown

P

to its projects around the world has helped reach a staggering 1.7 million people with the simple solutions they need to change their lives. Whether it’s a cycle race, bungee jump or

joining in a mud run, taking on a challenge is a fantastic way to push yourself to reach new limits this new year. And by choosing to use your challenge as a fundraiser too, you can become the ‘new you’ while making a life-changing

impact on women, men and children living in poverty. Children like nine-year-old Daniella in Bolivia

— a lack of clean water in her village, along with regular flooding during the rainy season, meant that Daniella and her friends often became ill, meaning they missed school and their families sometimes struggled to grow food. Now, Practical Action has installed a solar-

powered water pump, supplying water to the village, and new toilets for the school which local people are trained to maintain. With help from generous supporters, the lives of Daniella and her community have been transformed. Daniella said: “Before we had to go to the toilet

outside, sometimes we were scared if it was dark. Now my school has a better toilet and we have learned how to use it. We have clean water too, not muddy from the river. We can have a drink anytime we like.” There are lots of ways to turn your 2018 fitness

drive into a way to fundraise for Practical Action. It has free and discounted charity places in a vast range of organised races across the UK. If you prefer to start an event yourself, it has T-shirts, sponsor forms and information resources avail- able to support you every step of the way.
