and businessman once put it, “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.” The future, we are told, will be a contest


between the individual needs of people and workers, and the profi t-enhancing benefi ts of AI and automation. The substitution of capital for labour is at the heart of developing automation systems, robotic surgeons and driverless cars. The growth of the gig economy (which already


reaches far beyond the world of Uber drivers), will see a major shift away from beliefs in a one profession/one job for life career. Trust in the ability of business leaders, politicians and economists to support growth and jobs is at an all-time low. Even those who committed body and soul to global corporations know that it’s no guarantee of job security. So, how fast you respond to this situation in


the coming years may have long-term implica- tions for your career prospects. The problem is where to start. The fi rst thing to do is focus on the fact that
