Palmar, Mauritius
LOCATION: An hour’s drive from the airport, on the island’s less-developed east side. Think wild coast and postcard-perfect white-sand beaches, away from the bustling resort towns.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: The colour-block murals by French artist Camille Walala in the entrance hall give the adult-only hotel a hip feel. This spot doubles as a reception area, but they’ve done away with the desk to create a more informal atmosphere. Salt is all about making the hotel experience more meaningful: guests are invited to meditate on the beach on arrival; Mauritian culture is weaved into the experience; and the hotel employs island residents and sources everything locally, with the aim of giving back to the community and surroundings.

IDEAL FOR: Environmentally aware clients seeking a sustainable hotel with creature comforts, while being immersed in Mauritian culture. Essentially, it’s a millennial’s dream. While guests will by no means be slumming it, Salt is pared-back eco luxe: the luxury is in the experiences.
