SUMMARY
A PERSONAL TRAINER’S ROLE IS TO FACILITATE CHANGE AND HELP HIS OR HER clients throughout the stages of establishing and building rapport with them, gathering vital information, developing fitness goals, and implementing a plan to accomplish them. As a facilitator of change, a trainer creates conditions and uses techniques that will help bring about the desired outcomes for each client. Merely possessing a fit body, technical skills, and an extensive knowledge of health and fitness does not ensure a trainer’s success. Perhaps the most crucial factor for determining a positive climate for the working relationship is the trainer’s repertoire of communication skills. These skills include both verbal and nonverbal behaviors, such as attending, perceiving nonverbal messages, and verbal responding. These interpersonal communication skills can be learned, practiced, and mastered, and are important not only in the first stage of establishing rapport, but throughout the entire process.
