The following common adverbs are irregular, so they must be learned. Adjective (m.) Adjective (f.)
Adverb bref gentil brève gentille Example
brièvement Puis-je vous parler brièvement? gentiment Il joue gentiment.
Other common irregular adverbs do not have an –ment ending. This can make them more difficult to identify as adverbs, although they are words that you know well.

Although most French words that end with –ment are adverbs, there are a few nouns that end in these letters (e.g. logement, jugement, encouragement). They should be easy to distinguish, as unlike adverbs, they are preceded by an article.
