Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain and the country’s main industrial centre. The city is the capital of Catalonia, a large region in the north-east which borders with France. It is an important Mediterranean port.
At 100 sq km, Barcelona is quite small, but the industrial area around the city adds another 500 sq km to the metropolitan area. The city is divided into two parts. The Old City faces the sea and is where the historical buildings, such as the cathedral, are located. A modern
area, the Eixample, surrounds the Old City. Located here are more famous buildings, such as the church of La Sagrada Familia.
Barcelona is one of the most important cultural centres in Europe. There are six universities and a number of other colleges. There are several museums, including the El Museu Picasso (The Picasso Museum), and Spain’s most
